volunteer Roles

The roles listed below are thenlikely roles for which we require volunteers. Please note these details are for information only, as your Chief Marshal will allocate a role to you on arrival, and your role may change during your shift to accommodate the requirements of the Checkpoint.

Registration

Reception Staff

  • Meeting and greeting participants and support crews on arrival at Nevis Centre.
  • Ticking off arrivals against a master list.
  • Directing people to toilets.
  • Advising when next safety briefing starts.
  • Answering any other questions, or finding a staff member who can.
  • Helping withn the clear up at the end of the evening.

Registers

  • Receiving participants and ensuring they are given the correct envelope.
  • Ensuring participants complete their paperwork correctly.
  • Ensuring participants put on their timing device and any other identificationn correctly.
  • Helping withn the clear up at the end of the evening.

Registration Hosts

  • Helping within the Registration hall to advise participants and support crews on timings, refreshments, etc.
  • Answering general questions, or finding a staff member who can.
  • Helping withn the clear up at the end of the evening.

Checkpoints

All Checkpoint marshals report to Chief Marshal on site on arrival. Advise Chief Marshal of any important or new information. Report to Chief Marshal at end of shift, and only leave site after being given permission by Chief Marshal.

Check-in staff

  • Greeting participants on arrival at checkpoint and ensuring they are ‘chipped in'.
  • Checking participants for any signs of fatigue, exhaustion or illness, and if concerned referring them to medical staff.
  • Helping keep the site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant).

Parking marshals

  • Directing traffic according to the site plan.
  • Answering questions from teams and support crews.
  • Helping keepn the site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant).

Checkpoint hosts

  • Liaising closely with the Chief Marshal on site to work proactively to ensure then smooth running of the Checkpoint.
  • Directing participants and answering questions.
  • Monitoring all participants and advising they seek assistance from medical staff if they appear at all unwell.
  • Generally boosting morale by cheering participants as they arrive and encouraging them as they leave.
  • Helping keepn the site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant).

Exit marshals

  • Checking participants as they leave the Checkpoint and ensuring all appear fit to continue.
  • Stopping participants who seem unwell or unsure and talking to them, referring them to medical staff or the Chief Marshal if necessary.
  • Encouraging them with positive words and smiles as they exit the Checkpoint - this can make a world of difference as leaving can be a lonely time for participants.
  • Helping keepn the site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant).

Road crossing marshals

  • Warning participants of upcoming road crossings.
  • Checking participants to ensure they are fit to make an appropriate and safe judgement at road crossings.
  • Marshalling support crew vehicles where required to ensure walkers have a safe passage.
  • Ensuring your own vehicle is parked safely and sensibly if this is at the road crossing.
  • Helping keepn the site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant).

First aiders assistants

  • Assisting first aiders by directing participants to waiting area and directing themn to the next available first aider.
  • Assisting first aiders by recording patients treated as directed by first aiders.
  • Note: A first aid qualification is not essential for this role but wouldn be helpful.
  • Note: Please respect the confidentialn nature of this role and do not share any information about a patient with anyone else.
  • Helping keepn the site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant).

Trail markers

  • Working with the Operations Executive, marking the trail with the markers provided.
  • Collect then markers after the Event.

Trail marshals

  • Working withn the overall trail co-ordinator to manage allocated sections of trail
  • Under direction from the trail co-ordinator, respond to reports of problems onn the trail, such as signage, or obstacles on the trail
  • Note: Thisn does not include medical emergencies. These will be dealt with by then medical provider on site.

Glow stick marshals

  • Place glow sticks (provided) on specific sections of the course as directed by then trail coordinator

Sweep team

  • As directed by Event HQ and your Chief Marshal, sweep a designated section of then trail with a paramedic after the last participants have left then Checkpoint
  • Check for walkers who are unable to continue, and encourage the back-markers to keep going, assuming they are in a fit state to do so (this is the paramedics decision)
  • Collectn litter from the trail (bin bags will be provided)
  • Collect glow sticks from specific sections of the trail.

Medals marshals (Finish only)

  • Clap andn cheer Finishers home!
  • Work with Event team staff to present medals to finishers
  • Helping keep then site clean and tidy including clear up at close of Checkpoint (shift dependant)

Drivers for baggage transfer service

  • Support our participants by driving luggage between Checkpoints 3 and 4, or between Checkpoints 4 and the Finish as participants are unable to access their support crews at Checkpoint 4.
  • Transport bags from the main marquees into and out of vans on a shift basis running through the night.
  • Please note there is heavy lifting involved with this role, and you will need a clean driving licence and experience with driving transit - sized vans.

Overall, whatever the weather, whatever the time of day or night, if you can keep smiling, stay positive and fulfil your shift duties you will have helped the participants no end, and had a great time too!.
